Walk down the oral care aisle and you'll find whitening toothpastes, strips, charcoal powders, and LED kits all promising a Hollywood smile. Here's what the evidence actually says.
Hydrogen peroxide gels applied by a dentist — typically activated by a light source — deliver the fastest and most dramatic results. Most patients achieve 6–10 shades lighter in a single 60–90 minute session. Results last 1–3 years with good maintenance.
Custom-fitted trays with professional-strength gel used nightly for 2–3 weeks produce results comparable to in-chair treatment. The custom fit means the gel stays where it should and doesn't irritate gums.
Whitening strips containing 10–14% hydrogen peroxide can lighten teeth by 2–4 shades. They work, but results are more modest than professional treatment and the one-size strip often doesn't cover the back teeth evenly.
Most work by mild abrasion — they polish surface stains but don't change the intrinsic colour of your enamel. Good for maintenance after professional whitening; not a replacement for it.
Activated charcoal is highly abrasive and there is no clinical evidence it whitens teeth. Prolonged use can actually wear enamel, making teeth more yellow by exposing the darker dentine layer beneath.
